Buzz Bee Hunter - Review!

Bolt action rifle fans are in for a treat... once again, Buzz Bee cranks out yet another interesting blaster.

Check out the new Buzz Bee Hunter!

The Buzz Bee Hunter is a bolt action, spring-powered direct plunger (you read it right!), single-shot manual-reload blaster.

It comes packaged with 4 foam darts. The breech system is compatible with both Buzz Bee and Nerf foam darts. Some Nerf foam darts may need to be trimmed abit shorter for a better fit.

The firing range averages around 25+ ft.

There are ammo storage sections at its side (2 foam darts) and inside its shoulder stock (4 foam darts).

The Hunter is very compact in size... in fact, the shoulder stock is so small that most adults probably can't really use it as a support, so i guess some users might use it like a bolt action "pistol" instead! :)

  4. How effective do you think it would be in a war? And which do you think would be better in a war, this, the double shot, or the rapid fire rifle?

  5. weaponhazard,

The Buzz Bee Hunter is priced at SGD$19.90.

  6. John,

I'd consider it as more of a novelty blaster which has a cool rotating bolt action movement.

In terms of actual Nerf game usability, the Double Shot or Rapid Fire rifle would probably be more effective. :)

  7. Are their any air restorers, if so where are they located.

    ReplyDelete
  8. chris,

The Hunter's air restrictor (AR) is located inside its bolt, as commonly found in most Nerf and Buzz Bee blasters.

  9. Ok Thanks just double checking

  10. Do you think this would be easy to mod? If so, do you think it would be as easy as a nite finder?

    ReplyDelete
  11. John,

Well, the plunger size and design is quite similiar to the Nite Finder (its also a direct plunger blaster), so aftermarket spring mods are easy to do.

The bolt action breech system is a simple mechanism too, so making an air-tight bolt-to-barrel breech is just a matter of fitting the right sized brass, pvc or petg tubes.

So far i've tried out all the above mods on my set and its quite easy.

  12. Can post a mod guide on how to do these mods?

    ReplyDelete
  13. John,

The Hunter isn't one of the main blasters that i use (its just for novelty), so i wouldn't be posting up a full proper mod guide for it.

But i can just give you a quick guide on the simple mods i tried on it and how they were done:

    1) AR Removal: Use a pait of needle nose pliers to grip the dart post in the bolt, twist and pull it out.

Use a Dremel with drill bit to widen the air channel abit more inside the bolt.

    2) Spring Replacement: Get a stronger spring with OD not more than 22mm and length not more than 80mm, simply disassemble the plunger assembly and replace the original spring with it.

If the Hunter has difficulty priming after that, it means your stronger spring is too long or takes up too much space when compressed, change to a shorter spring or one with thinner wire or less coils.

    3) Air-tight Breech System: Take 2 sections of 9/16" brass tubes, length of one to fit within the barrel and another one for the barrel (up to you to determine the lengths, i'd recommend longer so you can cut it shorter if required).

Nest both 9/16" brass tubes in the bolt and barrel using layers of electrical or duct tape, so that they are positioned centered and secure within both sections.

Use a short 19/32" brass tube section (ie, 2 cm) to collar half-way over the tip of the 9/16" brass bolt section. This will act as a "connector" seal when the bolt is pushed forward and sealed with the brass barrel.

If you need reference, check my Brass Breech Longshot Mod Guide to see the principles behind air-tight breech systems.

    2. Unknown,

Unfortunately, i've already traded away all my Hunters already... never actually found a use for them in Nerf games anyways. :)

    3. anyway how many feet you get??....is this gun useless??...or wut??...thanks for replying...should i get this??

      Delete
    4. Unknown,

After doing all those mods, it got around 50+ ft ranges.

Imho, there are many other blasters that can achieve much longer ranges with alot less modding time and effort.

That's why i say its mainly a novelty blaster. Get it only if you like its fun bolt action feature, otherwise it'll just get outclassed by other modded blasters in actual Nerf games.

  26. hello SG Nerf I was wondering how did you replace the spring? the whole plunger is together.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ctank214,

Check my Hunter Internals Guide, you can see that the plunger is easy to dis-assemble.

    ReplyDelete

  30. hey when will the buzz bee hunter bee in the usa

    ReplyDelete
  31. would it be possible to mod this to use and eject shells?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Chris,

I guess its possible, but would need a fair bit of modding work though.

Actually, you might as well just get a Buzz Bee Rapid Fire rifle instead and mod it into bolt action:

    http://sgtoyz.blogspot.com/2009/03/buzz-bee-rapid-fire-review.html

Its much easier to just convert the Buzz Bee Rapid Fire into bolt action and many modders online have already done that to their units with guides posted up at the various Nerf forums.

  33. Can I still buy this in Singapore??

    ReplyDelete
  34. rey,

Yes, they can still be found at Toys R Us stores in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. How good is its range? I like the design though so I'll probably get it any way it looks like a kar 98k

    ReplyDelete
  36. DreamCrusher,

As mentioned in my review, its average stock range is around 25+ ft.

    ReplyDelete
  37. How far did it achieved after modding?

    ReplyDelete
  38. wafi,

Around 50ft, even after an additional air-tight brass breech system is installed. It's performance gains are naturally limited due to the small plunger volume and all the deadspace in the air tubing from the plunger to the bolt (see the internals guide).

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sg Nerf,

When I go to remove the old spring, there is no way to remove it. The plastic plunger is held in with a metal pin that is not assessable.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ALMOSTunseen,

You have to remove the metal pin first, then disassemble the priming rod to re-install a new spring.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Do you think this would work well as a base to make a TF2 Sniper prop?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

Its possible... the working bolt action mechanism is usable and a good base, so i guess you'll just need to extend the barrel and shoulder stock sections to scale up the overall design for the prop. :)
